General corrosion resistance SUH409 steel plate is significantly more corrosion resistant than mild or low alloy corrosion resistant steels. SUH409 steel plate has lower corrosion resistance than the higher chrome standard ferritics. SUH409 steel plate is best suited in mildly corrosive conditions where aesthetics are not a prime requirement. A SUH409 steel plate light surface patina or discolouration may form and this will, to some extent, retard further corrosion.

In recent years, however, and with the upcoming US government requirement for a 100,00 mile exhaust capability, other alloys have been becoming more prevalent.
It is not as high-temperature oxidation or resistant to corrosion as the higher alloyed stainless steels (for example 304SS or 430 SS)/409Ni is ductile and does not harden to any appreciable extent by cold working.
